Houston popularity boosted in wake of death

Following the unexpected death of pop and movie star Whitney Houston on Saturday we wanted to find out how Toluna Quick community members – fans or otherwise – reacted to the news.

Upon hearing about Houston’s death, 25 per cent of the 2000 people surveyed said that the sought out more information online. 15 per cent made a concerted effort to listen to her music and another 8 per cent took to YouTube to watch videos.

The BBC is today reporting that her record sales have seen a comparative surge in the UK with several songs set to re-enter the UK top 40 singles chart and a greatest hits compilation heading for the top 10 of the album chart. But Houston’s record company has had to fend off criticism of price hiking only hours after the singer’s death.

The trend for posthumous success is common – think Elvis or Frank Sinatra – so we asked our 2000 respondents if they had ever been compelled to buy the works by or about celebrities after their deaths.

More than 13 per cent of people have bought a CD following the death of a music artist with slightly fewer, 7 per cent, having bought DVDs and books as the result of the death of a famous person.
